Jaia
How would you describe your music or art to people?
Aggressive boujie fire sign.. but make it a poem
What first got you into poetry?
I accidentally walked into a poetry club meeting in high school and have been writing ever since.
What kind of energy, vibe, or message do you hope to spread?
Poetry and art in general is an opportunity to have a conversation with the audience - speak with urgency and honesty.
Who or what are your main inspirations? Groups? Specific albums?
Eartha Kitt, Meg Thee Stallion, Lil' Kim, and of course my spoken word collective family the Excelano Project
How does your identity influence your art?
My life and experiences as a young black woman are where most of my material comes from. Poetry is my way of deciphering what my identity means to me and where I stand in reference to the rest of the world.
Why do you love about performing?
We perform for the world every day of our lives, but performing my poetry is the only time I feel I willingly choose to do so.
How has the Internet helped you jumpstart your career?
Having access to read and experience the work of other poets online has encouraged me to continue writing, and even share my work on the internet time to time.
What is your favorite type of candy?
Very Berry Trolli Sour Gummy Worms (very on brand)
