Day Dreamer
How would you describe your music to people?
Jazz and Gospel Inspired Pop and R&B
What first got you into music?
I've been singing my entire life, I started writing songs in middle school. I didn't realize I was gifted in songwriting until much later. Over the years many people have asked if I am pursing music, but it wasn't until Fall 2017 that the president of acapella group I was directing told me, "If you pursue music, I think you can make it." It was her words that inspired me to start writing music for myself to perform as an artist.
What kind of energy, vibe, or message do you hope to spread?
I make music for the misfits, people like myself who don't really fit in and are trying to find themselves in the process. My music is also reflective of my Christian faith, experience, and upbringing.
Who or what are your main inspirations? Groups? Specific albums?
I am inspired by so many artists, so much so that when asking for feedback someone a friend told me that each song I write sounds so different and people don't know what to expect. As I grow as an artist, I am sure that I will settle into a genre. As of now, I have been inspired by recent artists such as John Legend, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Post Malone, Rex Orange County, Jess Glynne, Charlie Puth, and of course the greats from the past hundred years. My musical choices are informed by Contemporary Christian Worship and Gospel Choir Music. Generally, I try to be aware of and understand the macro-trends in pop music (scotch snaps, monotonic melody, minimalistic production, etc.) and incorporate them into songs that encapsulate a temporarily heightened emotional state.
How does your identity influence your art?
In every aspect.
Why do you love about performing?
To me, music is a spiritual experience. I find it interesting that the human body reacts in similar ways to the manifest presence of God and flawlessly executed music, and I don't think it's a coincidence. Music is inherently spiritual. Once the technicalities of performance are ironed out and internalized it is easy to get lost in the atmosphere that is being created by the harmonies in the air, and everyone from performer to audience member is invited into a transcendent human experience. I love to perform when that level of intuitive perfection is achieved.
What is your favorite type of candy?
Anything sweet and gummy: Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids, Life Saver Gummies, Mike and Ikes, etc.
